base jumping at kjerag
Kjerag is one of the world’s most active and well known sites for base jumping. Since 1994 we have logged more than 57 000 jumps.
rules
Please read through our rules at SBK BASE.
Rule 1 Experience
To jump with SBK Base at the exits on Kjerag and Smellveggen, you must have completed at least 250 skydives.
If you have less than 15 basejumps, you must follow SBK`s FJC before jumping. This is for your own safety!
This is a requirement because people have lost their lives after adamantly denying base instruction. You may have thousands of skydives but (as you are probably aware of) basejumping is not skydiving!
Although there are no guarantees, our instruction program will prepare first time basejumpers to successfully complete their first base jump under the supervision of one of our experienced instructors.
To participate in the base course you must be at least 18 years old.
SPECIAL RULES FOR WINGSUITS
You also must have minimum 50 wingsuit jumps from an aircraft before you are allowed to jump off Kjerag or Smellveggen. You must have a minimum of 40 base jumps before you will be allowed to jump off Kjerag or Smellveggen with a wingsuit.
Rule 2 Registration
A registry form must be filled out by anyone who plans to jump. This is done on site upon arrival.
A registration fee to SBK Base must be paid on site. Those who have already paid, must show their registry card.
Your logbook is needed to document your experience! This is mandatory. If you cannot document your jumps, we might deny you jumping with us.
Rule 3 Equiptment
If you are jumping with the SBK you need a gear inspection and approval from one of our instructors. Your pilot chute must be in good shape, bridle cord should be nine feet, and your canopy must be a seven cell. Maximum wing load should not exceed 0.85 lb./sq. feet. (Kg x 2.2 div. 0.85 geared up total weight min.) Velcro closed rigs are not allowed on any terminal jumps in Lysefjord. If you have a Velcro closed rig, you can only use it on slider down jumps on Eagle’s nest. Some equipment will be available to rent in Lysebotn. Two way radios are needed for good communication (bring your own US coded with channel 13/13, or it can be bought in the SBK shop).
Rule 4 Transportation
You are welcome to use your own transportation up the mountain where the hiking starts. But every time you do so, you MUST contact the SBK staff before you go up. The staff need to know:
- How many jumpers are on the mountain.
- How many will be in need of boat transport back to Lysebotn. If you do not tell SBK that you are going up, you may not have a seat on the boat!
And just to clarify: If you’re not a big wall climber, there’s no way of getting out of the landing zone without a boat. Therefore the SBK operates two boats; one rescue boat (the red inflatable boat) to assist jumpers who land in water, and at least one boat to ferry jumpers from the Geitaneset LZ back to Lysebotn. During the heli boogie extra boats will be in service.
Rule 5 Rescue boat
The safety/rescue boat must always be present in the water adjacent to the landing area before jumping from Kjerag or Smellveggen begins. No one is allowed to jump from Kjerag or Smellveggen without approval from the rescue boat driver. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. Discuss your schedule with the captain prior to departure up the mountain. The captain must be able to reach you with either radio or phone in case of an emergency. Every jumper should carry a 2-way radio for communication with the boat. Channel 13/13 (US coding)

general info
THE WEATHER
Kjerag is located in the south-western part of Norway, close to the coast which means the weather can change often and fast. In the morning it could be sunny with no wind, but in the afternoon it could be rainy and windy. Also, the temperature can vary a lot, from 20-25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 F.) down to 10-15 degrees Celsius (50 to 59 F.) in a day or two. You should bring clothing for these varying conditions when visiting Norway.
TO BRING
Lysebotn is a very small place, there is no ATM and no food store etc. Make sure you are well prepared, bring everything you need for your stay. The trail up the cliff can be wet and muddy, so an extra pair of boots and cargo pants can come in handy. Make sure your boots are well broken in before you come to Norway. Bad blisters can result from new shoes and can hamper your enjoyment of the hike to the top. Lightweight rain gear such as pants and top or poncho can make the difference between a comfortable hike in the rain, or being miserable. The hike takes about two hours and is a bit strenuous. You will sweat a lot, so bring a good supply of socks and underwear. Additionally, layering clothes is usually the most effective method of dressing, using a lightweight under layer for warmth, a breathable middle layer to keep you comfortable, and a wind/rain resistant top layer to keep you dry. This is especially helpful on rainy and windy hikes.
LAUNDRY
At the campground you will find laundry facilities to wash and dry your clothes. These machines are coin operated and use 10 NOK coins, 30 NOK to wash and 30-60 NOK to dry. Be sure to bring a supply of coins with you. You can also get change from the café, if necessary, but it’s best to bring your own and be prepared as they may not have many coins.
