Before you step off Kjerag, you step off the Pendulator. Our purpose-built exit trainer simulates a real BASE exit from 9 metres (30 ft), with a rope system that catches your fall just like a canopy. Up to 10 exits per hour — and an 80-90% improvement in properly executed exits at Kjerag to back it up.
PREPARATION
Hiking
The hike to Kjerag is part of the jump, but it can be demanding. The elevation gain combined is around 800 meters and quite steep at some parts. Expect around 2,5 hours hike to reach the main exit 6. Prepare by building your hiking fitness before you arrive, and get used to carrying your gear. This will give you the best possible conditions at the exit - both physically and mentally. If you're hiking with trekking poles make sure you have a prepared solution for jumping them safely down the mountain.
Accuracy
The landing zone at Geitaneset is surrounded by water and big boulders, it demands accuracy and active canopy piloting. Prepare yourself by flying as much large 7-cell canopy as possible, and complete at least 10-20 accuracy skydive jumps before attending the First Jump Course.
Canopy Drills
A BASE canopy flies very differently from a high-performance skydiving canopy. Get used to actively piloting a large 7-cell canopy and prepare by practicing:
- Quickly reaching for the toggles to correct heading alignment
- Deep brake stalls and canopy recovery
- Asymmetric heading control drills
- Controlled reversal of turns, and flat turns on half brakes or risers
- Rear riser turns and flares
Tracking skills
Tracking is a lifesaving skill in big wall BASE jumping. The further you separate from the cliff before deployment, the safer you are. Your first jumps will be slick — so slick tracking is your most important skill to practice before arriving.
Duration
The weather in Kjerag can be unpredictable. Give yourself the best conditions by planning to stay here at least 14 days during your First Jump Course. This gives you time to complete the FJC and build real jumping experience on top of it. A short trip puts you at risk of not getting enough jumps to build your currency and confidence due to weather holds.
First Aid
If things go wrong in the mountains, help is not always close. Prepare by taking a first aid course before you arrive. It can make all the difference for you, your BASE jumping buddies, or other hikers on the trail.
Family
Have the difficult conversation with your family before you jump. Make sure your wishes are documented — resuscitation preferences, organ donation, insurance, and a living will. Give a trusted person access to your accounts. BASE jumping carries real risk, and being prepared off the mountain matters just as much as being prepared on it.
